When mentioned about the feed pellet quality people mainly concern about the appearance, texture, smell, water content, pellet durability, percent fines, etc. Studies show that among the technological factors affecting the feed pellet quality feed formula accounts for 40%, raw material granularity 20%, modulating 20%, ring die specification 15%, cooling 5%, and other factors 5%. The raw material fineness determines the surface area of feed components. When the granularity is finer the feed surface area can absorb more steam water to increase the starch gelatinization degree, and decrease the wear of the ring die. The feed ingredients with big particles will cause the feed pellet to fracture and increase the feed powder. Feed manufacturers are inclined to adopt the top quality feed hammer mills to minimize the feed granularity differences.
The good modulating effect is an important factor affecting the feed pellet quality. According to studies under the nonclogging situation the higher the modulating temperature the better the feed pellet. The high modulating temperature can fully gelatinize the starch and improve the binding properties of the feed pellet. More and more feed manufacturers adopt the steam jacket modulator to increase the modulating temperature.
Different feed pellets have various requirements for the compression rate, and radiomicrometer of the ring die. So feed producers adopt corresponding ring die specifications to ensure the feed pellet quality when making different kinds of fed pellets.
In order to safely store feed pellets and ensure the feed pellet durability the temperature of pelletized feeds should be cooled about 3~5℃ above ambient temperature. Most feed producers use the counterflow pellet cooler to fully cool the feed pellet.
